The Banner Saga 3 picks up after The Banner Saga 2, following Jon as he sets out to find a way to stop the darkness from overtaking the world. He teams up again with his old friend Illia, now undead and weighted, and aids her fight against the undead. The storyline is told primarily from Jon’s arch-enemy point of view, Aife, who still wants to win back the Iron Throne. Although she has lost her father to the Lich King. Moreover, She is determined to get the throne for herself, using the sword blades of her father as a means to achieve this. With help from some unlikely allies, the Game proceeds to battle the undead army, which becomes much larger and more challenging to defeat when it reaches Highreach, the massive door that lies at the center of the world.

Once inside, the Game shifts to reveal a world outside the ruined ice kingdom. The Banner Saga 3 takes place thousands of years later, as the remnants of Winter hardens due to the Lich King’s efforts. Furthermore, The ice continues to melt as the citizens of the kingdom struggle to keep the darkness at bay. Jon and Aife battle it out in the field, using various weapons, including a giant snow hammer, a harp, and even the infamous bow of the Direwolf. However, the clock is ticking, and only a few hours remain before the darkness overtakes the world. The only solution is to turn to the Radiant ladder, which lifts the characters right into the heart of the action-the Frozen Throne.
However, the real question is, can Jon and Aife escape the Lich King’s clutches once they reach the top of the stairs and into the bright sunlight? It seems that, for now, the answer is no. A new path in the Game opens up, this time leading towards the mysterious kingdom of Sunwell. Inside the corrupted temple, the Banner Saga players learn that the Lich King’s insidious plan has not only brought about the frozen world, but he has also twisted the minds of the few who oppose him. They can have their characters die and be reborn again (which is unrealistic since rebirth only happens in traditional fantasy literature), or they can go for a peace offering.
